El texto presenta un análisis exhaustivo de las películas producidas en Hollywood que incluyen como eje central o de manera secundaria el tema de la discapacidad física. De acuerdo con el autor, el cine, gracias al gran poder que cumple en la conformación de representaciones sociales, ha jugado un papel central en la forma de representación de la discapacidad física. A partir del análisis de los estereotipos de las personas con alguna discapacidad física presentados por las películas el autor afirma que el cine hollywoodense ha contribuido a reproducir el punto de vista y la forma en que históricamente los grupos dominantes de la sociedad han concebido la discapacidad física y han tratado a las personas discapacitadas. Ya sea que las películas muestren simpatía o rechazo frente a los personajes discapacitados, los distintos estereotipos de la discapacidad física operan como mecanismos de estigmatización y de exclusión de los discapacitados de los distintos espacios y dimensiones de la vida social y contribuyen a su aislamiento. El autor sostiene que en la actualidad, existen grupos que luchan tanto en la vida social como en el cine en contra de la estigmatización y el aislamiento y a favor de la integración de los discapacitados a los distintos espacios y dimensiones de la vida social como ciudadanos con plenos derechos.

This article presents an exhaustive analysis of Hollywood films which focus on physical handicap, either as a main feature or as a secondary theme. According to this author, the cinema has played a central role firstly by the way in which it has portrayed physical handicap, and secondly because of the enormous influence the cinema exercises in the shaping of social representations. To support his point of view, the author uses an analysis of the film stereotypes of disabled people. He confirms that Hollywood films have contributed towards the propagation of the view held by society's dominant groups of physical handicap as such, and the way in which dominant groups have historically treated die disabled. In as much as films portray sympathy towards or rejection of the physically handicapped, the different stereotypes operate as mechanisms of stigmatization and exclusion of the disabled in all the various spaces and dimensions of social life, thereby contributing to the isolation of the handicapped. The author also mentions the fact that, both in everyday life and in films, there are now groups that are fighting against stigmatization and exclusion of the handicapped, and for the integration of the disabled into the various spaces and dimensions of social life as fully recognized citizens holding the same rights as the able bodied.
